We are delighted to announce the ” Jimmy Connor ” – Concierge of the Year Award proudly sponsored by Enterprise Ireland was won by Marie-Claire Sabogal representing the InterContinental Hotel Dublin.
Congratulations Marie-Claire !
Jimmy Connor was Concierge of the Grand Central Hotel and then at the Europa Hotel in Belfast. He was the embodiment of our motto “In Service Through Friendship” with both work colleagues, guests and Clefs d’Or Members alike. In 2006 Jimmy went to the Concierge Desk in the heavens and since 2011 the Concierge of the Year Award has been renamed “The Jimmy Connor Award” in honour of a consummate gentleman, a wee man with a big heart and a true professional! The Executive Committee of Les Clefs d’Or Ireland acknowledges the kind generosity of Mr John. D Toner Director of Hasting’s Hotels and Mr Tim Quigley from Enterprise Ireland in continuing their support of “The Jimmy Connor Award”.
Jimmy Dixon originally a Concierge from the Shelbourne Hotel and a past President of Les Clefs d’Or Ireland was proudly presented with a Lifetime Honorary Membership of Les Clef’s d’Or International Society.
“As a child Jimmy used to play in St Stephen’s Green and would peer through the railings at the Shelbourne Hotel and watch with fascination as the lords and ladies arrived in great horse-drawn carriages.” At fourteen he realised his dream becoming a pageboy in 1946 at the historic hotel; over the next 50 years he catered to the needs and eccentricities of the elite guests, politicians and countless aristocrats who graced the hotel with their presence. He retired in 1997, working the majority of his years as the Head Concierge of the Shelbourne Hotel; his desk a stage, himself the performer and the guests the enthralled audience.
